Buffalo Bayou is doing just fine in the wake of the Memorial Day floods, according to the opponents of the Memorial Park Demonstration Project.


The Memorial Park Demonstration project seeks to reroute and reshape a section of Buffalo Bayou that runs through Memorial Park and the River Oaks Golf Course. Harris County Flood Control officials put a $6 million price tag on the Memorial Park Demonstration Project. The City of Houston, the River Oaks Country Club and Harris County Flood Control have each chipped in $2 million.

The last heavy rains finished running down Buffalo Bayou last week and Tom Helm, a geologist and part-time river guide who has examined the waterway frequently since the floods, says the bayou held up admirably while more water than ever before – a rate of 3,000 cubic feet per second – was released from the reservoir.

Users of Memorial Park will see the city's marquee green space reborn over the next two decades, a process furthered with the unanimous approval of Houston City Council on Wednesday.

The Crestwood Garden Club was honored as the recipient of the Ima Hogg Volunteer Service Award recognizing its contribution to the design and maintenance of a garden in Memorial Park. Cindy Broiles and Deborah Brown accepted the trophy at the Memorial Park Conservancy Gala held on February 6, 2015.

For the first half of the program, Jim Blackburn, co-director of the Severe Storm Prevention, Education, and Evacuation from Disaster (SPEED) Center at Rice University and director of the Bayou City Initiative, and Dr. Stephen Klineberg, founding director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, will discuss flooding and the future of Houston.

This will be the first public conversation between Blackburn, who specializes in sustainable development, environmental law, and civil and environmental engineering, and Dr. Klineberg, urban and environmental sociology expert.

For the second half, Wendy Watriss, award-winning social and political photojournalist, will lead a discussion about documenting major traumatic events from the photographer's perspective. Watriss is joined by Houston Chronicle photojournalists Elizabeth Conley, Brett Coomer, Melissa Phillip, and Godofredo Vasquez, all of whom were on the front lines of documenting Hurricane H

Join us for our annual Memorial Park wildflower scatter: a fun, family friendly way to help beautify our favorite space! The scatter will take place on October 20 at 9a. Parking is available at the Cullen Running Trails Center and is an easy walk to our meeting spot at the top of the Living Bridge.

Bring the whole family, scatter some seed, pack a picnic, and stay a little while!

Sarah Newbery, Director of the Memorial Park Project, conducted a neighborhood presentation earlier this week at St. Theres's Church during which she reviewed Uptown TIRZ's progress in implementing the Master Plan. Councilwoman Ellen Cohen joined Joe Turner, HPARD Director in explaining what's been started and what should be finished by the end of the year. Shellye Arnold, MPC's Director and officials of the City of Houston Public Works and Traffic Departments made contributions.

This year’s Christmas Party will be a dinner al fresco served on the patio of Porta'Vino, a new Italian restaurant near our neighborhood on Washington Ave., north of the WOW Circle. Spouses/partners are invited to join the merriment this year. Crestwood Garden Club party hostesses will be offering a fixed-price, 3-course dinner
(choice of three entrees)at a cost of $40pp. Hostesses Christine Laborde, Susan Taggart, Suneeta Rangwani and Pat Sturdivant are providing 2 glasses of wine for each person dining (choice of red or white).
